9 Top Ways to Fix Keyboard Keys Not Working

Every key on your keyboard is crucial for you whether you do writing, coding, or any job you do on a PC. If a key does not work well, you can ignore it. However, it could be a serious issue when gradually most of your keyboard keys stop working. You should fix the issue before it could be frustrating or irritating for you. Here are some effective methods to fix keyboard keys not working:

Restart/Reboot Your Computer

Step 1: Go to the Start button that is the Windows icon and click on it.

Step 2: Now, touch the Power button that is normally on the right button corner on the displayed screen.

Step 3: Tap on the Power button and choose Restart from the shown options. You go the Power button on the CPU of your desktop or the top right corner on your laptop keyboard, keep pressing it for a few seconds to shut down your system, and turn it on again

Remove the Dirt & Dust from Your Keyboard

Step 1: Have a close look at your computer keyboard to check if it has a layer of dust & dirt.

Step 2: Use a clean & soft cloth piece or a compressed air can to remove the dust & dirt if you find it.

Step 3: Or, hold the keyboard front down and shake it for a few seconds. It will make the dust & dirt fall down from the keyboard. 

Step 4: Use a soft small brush and run its bristles throughout the keyboard 

Remove the Battery from Your Laptop

Step 1: Go to the back/base part of your laptop and find the battery compartment. 

Step 2: Plug in the charging cord.

Step 3: Use the keys that were not working to check whether they have started working now.     

Reconnect the Motherboard of Your PC (Desktop or Laptop)

Step 1: Visit a computer repair shop.

Step 2: Ask an expert there to check your device for any damage to the motherboard or allied hardware.

Step 3: Wait until you get your PC repaired.

Change Settings or Update Keyboard Drivers

Step 1: Choose Device Manager either clicking on the Start button or typing the respective term in the search bar.

Step 2: Tap on the Arrow next to the Keyboards.

Step 3: Choose the keyboard, and then Update Driver.

Step 4: Choose Search Automatically for Updated Driver Software.

Step 5: Now, tap on Update Driver.

On Mac desktop/laptop, you need to follow the below-mentioned steps:

Step 1: Open Settings and choose System Preferences.

Step 2: Move to Accessibility and tap on Keyboard from the left menu.

Step 3: Uncheck or deselect Enable Slow Keys if you notice the Enable Slow Keys option is selected. 

Change the Layout of Your Keyboard

For Mac PC, you need to:

Step 1: Go to the Keyboard option after opening System Preferences.

Step 2: Now, choose Input Sources. 

Step 3: At the bottom, choose Show Input Menu in the Menu Bar.

Step 4: Tap on the add button (+).

Step 5: Select a language to add

For a Windows PC, you can:

Step 1: Tap on the Start button and choose Settings.

Step 2: Choose Time and Language.

Step 3: Tap on Language, which is on the left side. 

Step 4: Now, tap on the existing language and choose Options. 

Step 5: Choose Add A Keyboard in the Keyboards section. After that, select the layout you are willing to add. 

Run a Malware Scan 

Step 1: Launch an antivirus program installed on your PC.

Step 2: Find Quick Scan and click on it to run it.

Step 3: Remove the infected files as the scan ends.

Step 4: Try using the faulty keys to know whether they have started working.

Turn on On-Screen Keyboard on Your Laptop

Step 1: Tap on the Windows icon.

Step 2: Move to Settings. 

Step 3: Tap on Accessibility and then toggle the switch on. The switch is next to the On-Screen Keyboard. Otherwise, you can select Ease of Access > Keyboard > turn on the On-Screen Keyboard.

Replace Your Keyboard

Visit a computer repair shop or an online store to get a new keyboard if none of the above-mentioned methods works for you. 

Note – Based on your operating system and computer brand name, some of the above-mentioned ways/methods may not help you fix the issue.
