How To Use Double Tap On Apple Watch

Double Tap, launched in October 2023, is a new feature. It allows users to control their Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra with the use of their one hand. They do not need to touch the display to control their Apple smart watches. For this, they can tap their thumb and index finger of their watch hand two times to execute many common actions of their daily life. 

What You Can Do with the Double Tap Feature on Your Apple Watch? 

Double Tap offers you a convenient and delightful experience with your Apple watch (Series 9, later, and ultra models). By using the thumb and index finger of your watch hand, you can control your watch, especially when you are doing something with your right hand. With this Double Tap features, you can:

Step 1: Answer and end phone calls.

Step 2: Open the Smart Stack.

Step 3: View a message from your notifications on your Apple watch.

Step 4: Pause, end, or resume a timer.

Step 5: Resume or end a stopwatch. 

Step 6: Snooze an alarm. 

Step 7: Play and pause music, audiobooks, and podcasts. 

Step 8: Switch to the New Elevation view in the Compass application. 

Step 9: Start and stop workout reminders.    

Step 10: And many more.  

Use Double Tap on Apple Watch Series 9, Later, and Apple Watch Ultra 

Step 1: Go to the Settings application on your Apple smart watch to open it.

Step 2: Click on Gestures, Double Tap, and then select any one from the displayed options – Playback (to play, pause, or skip) and Smart Stack (select Advance or select)

Step 3: Turn the Double Tap feature off if you do not watch to use gestures on your watch.   

How to Turn on Hand Gestures on Apple Watch 

Step 1: Open the Settings application on your Apple watch. 

Step 2: Go to Accessibility. 

Step 3: Now, tap on AssistiveTouch. 

Step 4: Click on Hand Gestures to turn it on.  

When Does the Double Tap Feature Do not Work on Apple Watch? 

The Double Tap feature works on Apple Watches with watchOS 10.1, or later versions. You can easily use this feature if you have Apple Watch Ultra 2 and Apple Watch Series 9. By updating the watch software, you can use this feature on older versions too. However, here are a few exceptions when this feature does not work:

Step 1: Heart Rate, ECG, Blood Oxygen, and Sleep Focus features are on.

Step 2: In the middle of an active workout session. 

Step 3: Maps, Walkie-Talkie, Mindfulness apps are active. 

Step 4: Fall Detection, Emergency SOS, and Crash Detection features are active. 

What to Do If Your Apple Watch Does Not Recognize Double Tap Gestures

Step 1: Raise the wrist of your watch hand. It will wake the display/screen. You should brighten the display before you try to use the double-tap gestures. Tap the thumb and index finger of your watch hand together twice to use this feature. 

Step 2: Ensure you have put the watch well on your wrist and unlocked it. 

Step 3: Check if you have turned on Sleep Focus, Low Power Mode, Water Lock, Theater Mode, etc. on your Apple Watch face. 

Step 4: Ensure the Double Tap feature is turned on and the watch is not paired as a Family Setup Apple Watch. 

Step 5: Find whether Wrist Detection is on. For this, go to Settings > Passcode. 

Step 6: Check whether wake on on Wrist Raise is on. For this, go to Settings > Display & Brightness. 

What to Do If You Unintentionally Trigger the Double Tap During an Activity

Step 1: Go to the Settings application and open it on your Apple smart watch. 

Step 2: Click on Gestures.

Step 3: Now, go to Double Tap. 

Step 4: Make the button off to turn off Double Tap. 

Step 5: Turn it on when you finish a certain activity. 

What to Do If the Double Tap icon is Shaking

Step 1: Go to Gestures after opening the Settings app on your smart watch. 

Step 2: Find the Double Tap icon, which is usually at the top of the screen. 

Step 3: The Double Tap is unavailable for the screen or any third-party apps if its icon shakes from one side to another

Step 2: Update your watch operating system if it has no watchOS 10.1 or later version. 

Step 3: Start your Apple watch again. 

Step 4: Turn off and turn on your Apple smart watch. For this, Settings > Gestures > Double Tap > Turn off Double Tap > Turn on Double Tap. 

Step 5: Ensure you have worn the watch well on your wrist. For this, Settings > General > Orientation.
